Transforming Mental Health Education in Primary Schools
Background
We partnered with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) to digitise their CUES-Ed programme, an innovative cognitive behaviour therapy initiative designed for Key Stage 2 students. Our goal was to create a scalable, engaging digital platform that could deliver mental health education effectively within the classroom setting.
Our Approach
We conducted a comprehensive review of the existing technical solution and implemented a revised architecture tailored to the needs of various end users, including NHS administrators, school staff, teachers, and children. Our contributions included:
- End-to-end service design and user experience optimisation (NHS admin, School admin, Teachers, Children)
- Re-authoring interactive whiteboard content for digital delivery
- Design and technical development of the digital platform
- Infrastructure setup and ongoing service operations
- Comprehensive testing, quality assurance, and deployment
- Live technical support and maintenance
Impact and Results
The programme has been running as a control trial through 2022-2023. The digital transformation of CUES-Ed has significantly enhanced its reach and effectiveness:
- The programme has been delivered to over 4,000 children across schools in Southwark, Croydon, and Lewisham.
- It has yielded consistently positive outcomes for entire classes, as well as for students identified as more vulnerable based on self-report measures.
By digitising CUES-Ed, we've enabled SLaM to provide accessible, engaging mental health education that supports children's well-being and resilience across diverse school settings.
