Narrative-Driven Digital Learning
Project Overview
We've partnered with Plan International on a wide range of projects - from animations and print to fully designed e-learning experiences. One of our most meaningful collaborations was the creation of Defy Normal, an introductory digital course focused on helping learners explore and challenge social and gender norms.
Our Approach
For Defy Normal, we wanted to move beyond traditional e-learning. We built a narrative-driven framework centred on Ms Munira, our main character, and her journey through the fictional North Normundia. Over five interactive “days,” learners joined her in uncovering the deep-seated norms in her community - and examining how best to drive positive, sustainable change.
This wasn’t just a story - it was a learning experience built to encourage self-reflection, critical thinking and dialogue. We made sure the experience was rich and engaging by integrating interactive graphic novel elements and immersive visuals alongside the learning content and complimented their offline training curriculum.
What We Delivered
We took the course from concept to completion, delivering:
- Creative workshops with Plan teams
- Full learning design and scripting
- Copywriting and content editing
- UX, wireframes and interface design
- Custom illustration, infographics and animations
- Build and implementation in Articulate Storyline
The Outcome
Although Plan International haven’t published specific stats on course engagement, Defy Normal is now part of their global Plan Academy platform - a key tool used by teams and partners across their 75+ country programmes. The course supports Plan’s broader mission to promote gender equality and challenge discriminatory norms, helping learners all over the world develop the understanding and tools they need to make change happen.
Working on Defy Normal was a great example of how well-crafted digital learning, when powered by strong narrative and purposeful design, can play a vital role in tackling complex global issues.
