Expanding Access and Engagement in Music Education through Digital Services
Background
Atticmedia has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with ABRSM, supporting their evolution from a traditional examination board into a digitally-enabled music education leader. Our collaboration spans multiple projects aimed at extending ABRSM’s reach, modernising its offer, and engaging new generations of learners and educators.
Two early highlights from this relationship include:
- SoundJunction: An award-winning online platform that empowered young people to explore, create, and understand music. The platform included free teacher resources and became a benchmark for digital music education tools, winning a BIMAS Award for innovation.
- Melody Writer: A web-based tool helping students learn and practice melody composition and rhythm. With intelligent feedback and interactive features, it demystified a traditionally complex area of music theory.
These projects laid the foundation for a trusted and creative working relationship built on shared values around education, accessibility, and innovation.
Challenge
ABRSM approached Atticmedia to help reimagine how their services could better support schools and individual learners. The brief was twofold:
- Develop a blended learning concept for schools that would enable mixed-ability students to play together more effectively in the classroom.
- Explore how the core concept could be translated into a B2C offer, opening up access to learners and parents outside of the formal education system.
Our Solution
Atticmedia delivered a suite of exploratory and design-led services to test, visualise and bring these ideas to life:
- Creative workshops with educators, stakeholders and musicians
- User experience design & wireframing to ensure intuitive interaction
- Conceptual design and artwork for both educational and consumer-facing environments
- Game design and prototyping, including ideas for an engaging digital experience to teach musical skills while raising brand awareness
